The Joy of Zen Meditation

Often I will ask people, at random, if they are happy. More times than not, they answer with “About what?” This tells me a lot about their state of mind. People have been raised to believe that no one is really happy. The successful man has always been portrayed by the multi-tasking, 60 hour a week worker who’s main goal in life is to make a lot of money. We all know the old saying “Money doesnt buy happiness”, but most people really believe that it does.

How To Meditate?

If you have never meditated before, don’t worry. Here are the basic steps in the practice of meditation.

First, choose a time of day that is conducive to meditating such as morning, mid-day, evening or midnight. Once chosen, try to meditate the same time every day.

Second, find a quiet room. You have the option of sitting on the floor in the lotus position, that is, with legs crossed or you can sit in a straight-backed chair with your both feet planted squarely on the floor.

Meditation Can Lower Blood Pressure

The concept behind meditation is to calm. More importantly, it is meant to reduce stress. When you are aggravated or angry your blood pressure rises. Perhaps you work in an office where deadlines seem to occur every day. Perhaps you work at home and there is so much to do and so little time to do it that you tend to get anxious and upset.

No matter which category you fall into, there are little tips that can help you in alleviating the stress and help to relieve the anger and frustration you are feeling. If you are at work take 5 minutes and find a quiet place where you can begin a deep-breathing exercise. Close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly. In no time the stress will be gone and your blood pressure will return to a normal level.
