Western Diet Raises Risk of Colon Cancer

It has been reported that colon cancer patients who eat a lot of red meat and french fries will raise their risks of suffering a relapse and dying early. These patients who favor such western diet are three times more likely to have a recurrence of colon cancer compared to those who eat fish, chicken, vegetables and fruits.

Researchers looked at 1,009 patients suffering from stage 3 colon cancer and surveyed their eating habits after they had been treated through surgery and chemotherapy.

From the eating habits surveyed, the researchers found two types of diets: a western style diet rich in red meat, fatty products, refined grains and desserts, and a prident diet that includes fish, poultry, vegetables and fruits.

The researchers followed up on the patients for over a five-year period, they found 324 people had a relapse and 223 died with a colon cancer recurrence. Most of the patients who suffer a relapse had western style of diet.

The study suggests that people who treated for advanced colon cancer can actively improve their odds of survival by their lifestyle and dietary choices.
