Quit Smoking Without Weight Gain

stop-smoking-without-weight-gain.jpgMost people know that the more fat and calories we consume, the more likely we will gain weight. But, there are many other things that can trigger a weight gain as well. Some of the most common weight gain triggers are: quitting smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, lack of exercise, etc..

One common concern among smokers is weight gain after they quit smoking. In fact, many would-be ex-smokers are afraid to quit and up to 90% of them cite worry about weight gain as a reason. But fortunately, understanding why weight gain follows smoking cessation can often prevent it from happening.

I have found an excellent video (only 3 minutes) that explains the correlation between quit smoking and weight gain. It also shows you how to prevent weight gain when you quit smoking. The tips in the video work for me and I hope it can be useful for you too. Enjoy it!

healthy-family.jpgIf you’re looking for information on how you can live a more healthier life in the coming year, you’ve come to the right place. Here you will find 10 healthy living habits that you can adopt.

1. Manage Stress.  Stress affects our health in a very negative way. It lowers your immune system, deprives you of sleep and even increases your risk of heart attack. If you’re looking for a way to cultivate your healthy living habit, learning how to manage stress should be on top of your “to-do” list.

2. Drink plenty of Water.  Yes, perhaps you’ve heard about this millions of times now but it’s still worth mentioning. Because you will be amazed that most people don’t drink enough water everyday, they prefer to drink soda and beer. Water plays a very important role in helping to cleanse your body internally. So, drinking plenty of water is a healthy living habit you must cultivate.

3. Regular Exercise.  Adding exercise to your day adds years to your life. You don’t have to run a marathon or become iron man triathletes, just walk for 30 minutes a day is an excellent start. Believe me, if you exercise regularly, you will always have positive energy, feel better and healthier. Exercise helps you sleep better at night and have more energy in the morning.

4. Take multi vitamins.  A well balanced diet is excellent; however a multi vitamin is an excellent tool for a little extra insurance. Plus, it’s an easy thing to add to your daily routine.

5. Eat more fruits and veggies.  It goes without saying that eating your fruits and veggies is good for your health.  Add one extra serving of fruits and veggies to your day and begin living a healthier life.

6. Eat less saturated fat.  Instead of ordering a burger or a steak at dinner, consider chicken or fish.

7. Eat less sugar.  Sugar causes a rapid rise in blood sugar and a general feeling of well being. But the bad news is that it also causes a rapid drop in blood sugar and a feeling of no energy. Then you eat more sugar and the cycle repeats itself. The highs and lows of sugar level in your blood can wreak havoc your body. The solution, eat less sugar and if you do choose to have a sugary snack, eat it with a protein so your body’s metabolism remains more stable.

8. Take Fish Oil.  Fish oil and omega 3 fatty acids help reduce cholesterol and protect your brain against degenerative diseases, it also helps to reduce inflammation in our bodies.

9. Visit your doctor for a regular checkup.  If you’re over 30, having a regular checkup is a good healthy living habit. This is your preventive measures for early detection of any serious illness and taking swift actions for treatment.

Tips To Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

holiday-eating-family.jpgThe year-end holiday season is just around the corner and undoubtedly foods are one of the focal point during holidays. Many people worry that they will pack on extra pounds when joining family and friends in celebration.

Here are some useful tips to avoid holiday weight gain and ensure you to stay in shape…

  1. Don’t skip your exercise routine. It can be difficult to stick to your exercise routine during the holidays as there will be many holiday errands to run. But lack of activity during the holidays is one of the major causes of weight gain. So, I suggest you try your very best to stick to your exercise routine.
  2. Choose wisely and the healthier options. Before you fill your plate, think about which foods are your favorites and which ones you can do without. It’s also a good idea to fill up on Choose to have the low-calorie foods first to avoid overindulging. Always remember that foods aren’t the only major source of calories. Drinks such as fruit punch, sodas, eggnog and alcoholic beverages can contain 150 to 450 calories per glass. For your info: Calories in a can of Coke (330ml) is 139kcal. Calories in a glass of orange juice (200ml) is 88kcal. One bottle of beer contains about 150 calories.
  3. Don’t overeat, learn to control your portions. Eating smaller portions of food is one of the easiest ways to cut back on calories but with the current trend of super-sizing, it can be a challenge to stick to the right portions. Click here to view a guide for a daily food serving. NOTE: To measure a serving size, use you hand as a guide. Generally, a serving size is what can fit into the palm of your hand.
  4. Don’t starve yourself. One of the most common mistakes people make is to go hungry all day so that they can take in more foods later on. This is a BIG no-no! Why? Because you will be so hungry after a whole day fasting that you will forget about any sense of control or moderation when you see food on the table. So, please don’t set yourself up for an eating binge. A useful tip that works is to have a snack before you go to a party. A piece of fruit is the best choice. This will help to keep you somewhat satiated.
  5. Eat more fruits and vegetables. I just have one advice here: make fruits and veges your best friends if you’re serious about controlling your weight. These friends of yours not only can help you to avoid weight gain, they can also keep you healthy in the long run.

Last but not least, have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. GBU.

What is a detox diet? Is Detox Diet Right for You?

detox-diet-juice.JPGPerhaps you have heard of detoc diet and wondered if it is something you should try. In order to find out if detox diet is right for you, it is important to first understand what a detox diet is.

What is a detox diet?

A detox diet is a diet whose main purpose is to flush out and eliminate toxins from the body. Not everyone believes the importance of flushing out toxins from our body or it’s necessary to do so. However, due to an ever increasing pollution in the environment we’re living in these days, toxins can come from many sources like preservatives, pesticides and your body’s own waste.

There are many kinds of detoxification diets that require the dieter to undergo various lifestyle or dietary changes for a period of time. These changes include:

  • Fasting, including water fasting and juice fasting
  • Food combining
  • Calorie restriction
  • Herbal detox

So how do you know if it is right for you?

In order to decide whether detox diet is right for you or not, here are some recommended things you should do first…

  • Research the diet to make sure you’re prepared for the effects of the diet, and make sure you can fit it into your lifestyle.
  • Decide how you’re going to handle the side effects. Many detox diets leave you feeling extremely hungry and low in energy, particularly during the first couple of days. People on detox diets often suffer from headaches, irritability and insomnia. However, in many cases, these feelings only last for a few days and the feelings of well-being and more energy will usually follow.
  • Talk to your doctor. A doctor may be able to help you choose a detox diet that is safe, and which will work for your current health condition. Keep in mind that some herbal detox diets may be harmful if you are sensitive to the herbs.

What are your diet goals?

Why are you considering a detox diet? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to have more energy? Are you seeking for a more natural lifestyle and want to start a new lifestyle by purging toxins out of your body? These are all the most commonly reasons why people want to consider a detox diet, knowing your personal goal and reasons can therefore help you determine whether detox diet is right for you.

If you’re new to detox diets, consider choosing one that only lasts for a day or two rather than several weeks. This may help you determine if the diets are right for your current health condition and lifestyle.

To sum it up, education and preparation are the two most important things to have before you begin a detox diet.

Research the possibilities, understand the side effects, have a goal, and make certain you are taking care of your health rather than risking it. There is a broad spectrum of detox diets available - choose one that is most suitable to your personal goals and lifestyle.

Symptoms of Hypothermia And Treatments

hypothermiaThe cold weather can pose some dangers to people who like to venture outside. One of the most dangerous situations that can occur during freezing weather is hypothermia. Victims often do not realize that they are in danger until it is too late. Once hypothermia sets in, they may find it difficult to think clearly, making a bad situation worse.

The best way to combat hypothermia is to prevent it in the first place. Dressing in layers of warm, loose clothing and keeping your head covered are the most important things you should do when venturing outside. Staying active enough to keep warm but not tiring yourself out is also important. Even if you do all of these things it is still important to know the symptoms of hypothermia and its basic treatment.

Here are the symptoms of hypothermia:

  • Uncontrollable Shivering - When you shiver, the body is attempting to generate heat because it is too cold. If shivering doesn’t subside quickly, that’s your body’s way of telling you that you need to seek a source of heat.
  • Fatigue - Hypothermia victims will begin to feel tired or lethargic. They may also develop a sense of apathy. These symptoms make it more difficult for victims to seek help.
  • Decreased Coordination - Those suffering from hypothermia become uncoordinated. They often stumbling about and become unable to do things with their hands that would normally be easy.
  • Confusion - This is one of the most dangerous symptoms of hypothermia. Victims lose their ability to think coherently and make decisions. They may mumble or speak incoherently. Their mental state could render them unable to fend for themselves.

First Aid or Treatments for Hypothermia:

If you or someone you know shows signs of hypothermia, prompt treatment is critical. Here is what needs to be done:

  • Lay the person flat and keep them warm. Remove wet clothing if possible and replace it with dry clothes. Wrap the person in blankets. Be as gentle as possible because rough handling could cause cardiac arrest.
  • Give the victim warm liquids if they are conscious. This will help them warm up from the inside. Be sure, however, not to give them caffeine or alcohol. These things can get in the way of the body’s natural heat production.
  • If the victim is unconscious, keep a check on their breathing and heartbeat. CPR or rescue breathing may become necessary.
  • Call for qualified medical help as soon as possible. Hypothermia sufferers need prompt medical attention beyond first aid.

If you’re planing to venture out in freezing temperature for long period of time, it is important not to be alone. If you fall victim to hypothermia, having someone with you could be the difference between life and death. It is much easier to recognize the symptoms in someone else than it is to recognize them in yourself.
