Coping With ADHD Sleep Disorder

Understanding ADHD Sleep Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common behavioral disorder that affects an estimated 8% to 10% of school-age children today. Studies had shown that about 80% of those children and adults who are suffering from this type of behavioral disorder have difficulty sleeping.

Some studies also show that ADHD sleep disorders rank among the top ten cause why some people can not sleep at night. Some people with ADHD sleep disorders stay awake in bed for for two to three hours before they finally fall asleep. The stress of not being able to sleep at ease can trigger other forms of psychological and physiological imbalance causing the sufferers to become prone to depression and other forms of mental problems.

Positive Effect of Alcohol on Diabetes

Study has shown that light to moderate drinkers of alcoholic beverages have lower diabetic risk than do abstainers. How alcohol reduces the risk of diabetes has not yet been clearly established. But recent research has demonstrated that alcohol improves the body’s resistance to insulin.

People who suffer from type 2 diabetes are resistant to insulin. That’s the hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates the level of glucose in the blood. Without this hormone, the body can’t use glucose effectively. Our body needs glucose for energy.

Researchers found that consuming alcohol directly improved the action of insulin in both healthy people and diabetics. However, the effect was much greater among the diabetics. Alcohol also improved fatty acid levels.

The researchers conclude that light or moderate consumption of alcohol can regulate and improve insulin activity in our body and may reduce potential cardiac complications of diabetes.

Stress And Overeating

How Overeating Creates More Stress in the Long Run

Unlike depression, where the ability to eat is dissipated, stress and overeating go hand in hand.  You know those days when nothing seems to go exactly as you had planned so you probably sit down and begin snacking. You’re unaware that you have just finished an entire bag of chips.

Comfort food, while necessary, can become too much of a good thing.  You need to have that piece of chocolate cake once in a while.  When you are stressed out it seems that nothing will satisfy the hunger, thus the eating binge continues.

Here’s an example.  Let’s assume you are working at your computer and you are a bit stressed out because the deadline is approaching.  You may think that a bar of chocolate will keep you going, but the true intent is to somehow relieve the stress that is building up.  While the sugar high you may experience for a short amount of time has elapsed, the stress increases and you need something more substantive.  Perhaps you call the local deli and order a deluxe burger and a chocolate milkshake.

While you may be relieving your stress, you are adding pounds to your body that in the end will cause more stress because of the weight you have gained.  Moreover, eating more and exercising less will increase your risk for heart disease or stroke and in the end the stress remains.  Now you have two problems to deal with.

The only way to alleviate stress is through regular exercise and avoid overeating.  A 20-minute walk can do wonders for your health and your mind.  The body will release endorphins which will give you that natural high and you will not only feel good but will not look to food to solve a problem.

Food is not meant to be the cure for a stress-related symptom.  You can tell this by the experience you have when overeating.  Are you enjoying the food? Does it really make you feel good?  Does it take away the stress?  The answer is probably not.

Stress is a fact of life, but combined with food you have double trouble.  When you are stressed, instead of eating, take a long walk, meditate or engage in a workout that will clear your mind and prevent you from overeating.

Western Diet Raises Risk of Colon Cancer

It has been reported that colon cancer patients who eat a lot of red meat and french fries will raise their risks of suffering a relapse and dying early. These patients who favor such western diet are three times more likely to have a recurrence of colon cancer compared to those who eat fish, chicken, vegetables and fruits.

Researchers looked at 1,009 patients suffering from stage 3 colon cancer and surveyed their eating habits after they had been treated through surgery and chemotherapy.

From the eating habits surveyed, the researchers found two types of diets: a western style diet rich in red meat, fatty products, refined grains and desserts, and a prident diet that includes fish, poultry, vegetables and fruits.

The researchers followed up on the patients for over a five-year period, they found 324 people had a relapse and 223 died with a colon cancer recurrence. Most of the patients who suffer a relapse had western style of diet.

The study suggests that people who treated for advanced colon cancer can actively improve their odds of survival by their lifestyle and dietary choices.

Heart Attack Recovery And Repair

The usual treatment for a patient after having a heart attack is to help to recover normal blood flow to the heart. This is to prevent further damage to the heart muscle and reduce the risk of recurring attack in the future.

But there is nothing a doctor can do to repair the damaged heart muscle tissue. During a heart attack, the muscle tissue becomes injured and damaged due to the lack of blood flow and oxygen. There is a permanent scar left in the heart tissue. Right now the treatments are focused on opening the blood vessels so that blood can flow normally to the heart again. Nothing can be done to repair the scar.

Scientists are now working on a new treatment using adult bone marrow stem cells, which they believe can actually repair the permanent scar left in the heart tissue. Besides reducing the amount of scar, the new treatment is also focusing on improving the function of the heart. With this new treatment, scientists hope that they can help patients to live longer and more productive lives after a heart attack.

Pre-clinical work that uses adult stem cells has been done in animals and it proves to be very effective in repairing the damage of heart tissue due to a heart attack. The research showed that when adult stem cells were injected into the heart muscle, the stem cells grafted themselves onto the damaged heart tissue and patched up the scar, restoring the heart function to its original condition in just two months. The scar in the heart tissue was reduced by 50 to 75%. No other treatment can reduce scar tissue to that extent.
